A football finance expert tells i how Leicester escaping a points deduction has undermined faith in the Premier League's rules
The Foxes appeared destined for two potential points penalties this season after multiple years of overspending, with the Premier League finding they had breached the three-year loss limit by £24.4m from 2019 to 2023.
As a result, Leicester were an EFL club by the 30 June deadline, meaning they were not in a position to be regulated by the Premier League despite spending 98.4 per cent of the regulatory period in the top flight.Alongside this, there is a certain intrigue around this case as Leicester altered the end date of their financial year from 31 May 2023 to 30 June 2023, taking them past their official exit from the league.
“It is of critical importance that the Premier League is able to enforce its rules consistently to maintain the principle of fairness. The League will now consider what further action it can take to ensure this is the case.”
