Abigail Steele, 34, died in Nottinghamshire Police custody on October 31. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, with a coroner's inquest ongoing.
A woman who died in Nottinghamshire Police custody has been named as Abigail Steele as investigations continue into her death. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation last month into the contact police had with a 34-year-old who died at the force's custody suite on October 31.
An inquest into the woman's death, which opened at Nottingham's Council House on Monday, December 30, revealed the detainee's name and explained that her cause of death was currently unknown. Coroner Nathanael Hartley said Ms Steele had been identified by police officers at the Radford Road facility, where she had been taken after being arrested on suspicion of shop theft on October 30. The IOPC said she had been charged with shop theft and remanded in custody to appear in court on November 1, but was found unresponsive during a cell check at 10.30pm on October 31. The watchdog added Ms Steele was pronounced dead at 11.12pm, despite efforts to resuscitate her. Mr Hartley, opening the inquest into her death, said a post mortem examination had provisionally recorded her cause of death as unascertained. The coroner explained she had been identified by police officers, who had checked her identity when taking her into the secured facility. Mr Hartley adjourned the inquest so that further inquiries could take place, with the coroner's investigation to resume at a future date. 'I would like to conclude by offering my sincere condolences to Abigail's family and friends,' he added. The IOPC is investigating the contact police and staff had with Ms Steele before her death, following Nottinghamshire Police's mandatory referral to the complaints body. The watchdog previously confirmed that it sent investigators to the custody suite to begin gathering evidence, including taking initial accounts from the officers and staff present. It has also gathered custody records, police body worn footage and custody suite CCTV as part of its investigatio
