Jemma Bruce, from Irvine, Scotland, has been diagnosed with two benign ovarian tumours. Despite experiencing severe pain and vomiting, she claims her pleas for surgery were ignored by NHS doctors. Now, she is raising funds for private surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes to prevent future tumours and reclaim her life.

Jemma Bruce, a 22-year-old from Irvine in North Ayrshire, Scotland, is facing a heartbreaking situation after enduring years of pain caused by two ovarian tumours. Diagnosed at 13 and 21 respectively, Jemma claims she was repeatedly dismissed by doctors at University Hospital Crosshouse who refused to remove the benign tumours unless her symptoms worsened. Despite experiencing daily vomiting from the pain caused by the second tumour, Jemma alleges her pleas for surgery were ignored.

It wasn't until the tumour began to cut off the blood supply to her ovaries and fallopian tubes, requiring emergency intervention after nine months, that she finally received treatment. This ordeal forced Jemma to drop out of her final year of a social work course, leaving her housebound and plagued by panic attacks. She now fears doctors and delays seeking medical attention, fearing she will be dismissed once again. Desperate for relief and worried about future tumours, Jemma has launched a fundraising campaign to pay for private surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. This procedure, known as a salpingo-oophorectomy, costs an estimated £7,500 and is not readily available through the NHS. While the NHS typically recommends this surgery for individuals at high risk of ovarian cancer, those with specific genetic predispositions, or those with a strong family history of the disease, Jemma feels she has not been adequately heard by the healthcare system. Her experience highlights a concerning trend of women's voices being silenced in medical settings, leading to delayed diagnoses and unnecessary suffering. Jemma's story is a stark reminder of the importance of patient advocacy and the urgency for healthcare systems to prioritize women's health concerns. She hopes that by sharing her experience, she can empower other women to speak up for themselves and demand the care they deserve. Her GoFundMe campaign, which has already raised over £300, reflects the public's empathy and support for her cause

Both Peggie and Upton work at the A&E department of Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. The health board and Upton had initially sought to hold the proceedings in private, but Judge Antoine Tinnion ruled that the public interest outweighed concerns about privacy.
