New NHS figures reveal a concerning increase in the number of new mothers in Yorkshire seeking help for perinatal mental health. The rise in demand for support services highlights the growing need to address maternal mental health issues.

The number of new mothers seeking help for their mental health is on the rise in Yorkshire, according to new figures. According to the latest NHS figures, 5,025 women sought help for perinatal mental health across former Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) areas in Yorkshire in the year ending November 2024. This is compared to 4,175 the year before - an increase of nine per cent.

Perinatal is the period of time from when someone becomes pregnant to after they give birth, and encompasses both ante- or pre-natal and postnatal or postpartum periods. Services for perinatal mental health within the community cater to women dealing with moderate to severe mental challenges during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. This support also extends to those with a personal or family history of mental health issues. On a national level, more than 62,700 people across England were provided perinatal mental health assistance in the year up to November, indicating a 16 percent hike from the preceding year and a 30 percent leap from 2021-22. Below are listed the number of people seeking help for their mental health in every CCG in Yorkshire: NHS Kirklees CCG NHS Calderdale CCG NHS Bradford District and Craven CCG NHS Leeds CCG NHS North Yorkshire CCG NHS Sheffield CCG NHS Doncaster CCG NHS Barnsley CCG NHS Rotherham CCG NHS Vale of York CCG NHS East Riding of Yorkshire CCG NHS Hull CCG NHS Morecambe Bay CCG NHS Cumbria CCG. What the experts say Karen Middleton, who leads campaigns and policy at the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, said: 'More women accessing specialist perinatal mental health services locally is, in some ways, welcome news, as it highlights the progress made to ensure care is available in areas of the UK where it wasn't before. 'However, with suicide remaining the leading cause of death between six weeks and a year after birth, we cannot for a minute think it is job done.' She mentioned the disparities in care received by some women need to be completely 'eliminated'. She said: 'We need to see that supporting perinatal mental health is not just an issue for specialist services but is at the heart of good maternity care.' The NHS has reported a national increase in women receiving support, following the establishment of 41 maternal mental health services across the country. These clinics provide assistance from psychologists and midwives to address issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder following birth trauma, perinatal loss or those with a severe fear of childbirth. An NHS spokesperson said: 'The NHS is committed to ensuring all women and babies receive high-quality care before, during and after their pregnancy. 'This data shows record numbers are now accessing perinatal mental health support, with increased investment ensuring every area of England has a specialist team.' They further noted that almost nine in 10 women are now reporting that they are receiving mental health support during pregnancy. 'If you are pregnant or have given birth recently and are struggling with your mental health then please ask your GP or other services for support, the NHS is here to help,' they said
