In a coordinated effort to combat youth and gang violence, Manchester Police conducted dawn raids at seven properties in east Manchester, resulting in 11 arrests. The operation targeted suspected drug dealers, violent offenders, and individuals involved in gang activity.
Dawn raids targeting youth and gang violence were conducted at seven properties across east Manchester on Tuesday, February 11th. Tactical aid officers, equipped with saws and battering rams, entered homes in Gorton and Openshaw shortly after 6 am. The operation resulted in 11 arrests, spanning a range of suspected offenses including possession and intent to supply class A and B drugs, serious violence, and gang-related activities.
Seven men and two women, aged 16 to 28, were being questioned by detectives hours later. Inspector Dan Pickavance, bronze commander of Operation Gandak, spoke outside one of the raided properties in Gorton, expressing his weariness of witnessing young lives lost due to gang violence, both as victims and perpetrators. He emphasized the ongoing commitment to making communities safer by removing criminals who exploit young individuals. Searches throughout the day uncovered various amounts of cannabis, heroin, and crack cocaine, as well as weapons including 'zombie' knives. Insp Pickavance described the findings as 'very positive' and anticipated a 'massive' impact on local drug distribution networks, noting that at least one drugs line had been shut down. He asserted that such activity would no longer be tolerated in Manchester's streets and that today's operation marked just the beginning of a sustained effort to disrupt youth exploitation, drug lines, and retaliatory violence between gangs. The community of Gorton deserves better, and that is what the police are aiming to deliver. Local councillors John Hughes and Julie Reid were also present at the raids. Coun Reid highlighted the community's shared concerns about open drug dealing and the frustration over perceived inaction by the police. She stressed the desire to demonstrate a collective commitment to addressing these issues and cleaning up Gorton, ensuring residents can feel safe in their own neighborhoods
