A recent Ipsos survey shows that awareness of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is alarmingly low among Brits, particularly in older adults and young parents. The virus can cause severe health complications in vulnerable groups, yet many are unaware of its dangers. The 'game-changing' RSV jab for babies could significantly reduce hospitalizations.
Cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus ( RSV ), a common winter virus that can lead to severe health complications in vulnerable older adults and young babies, are currently peaking. However, a recent Ipsos survey conducted between September 2nd and 30th, 2024, revealed that many Brits are unaware of the virus, with only 14% of respondents aged 16 and over having heard of it.
Awareness was even lower among those aged 60 and above, with 86% of respondents in this age group not familiar with RSV, despite being at risk of serious illness from the virus. Even those who were aware of RSV were often under the impression that they were unlikely to catch it, despite increased exposure from spending time with loved ones and going out in public. The 'game-changing' RSV jab being developed for babies could reduce hospitalizations by 83%. With limited treatment options for RSV, hospital care usually involves supportive measures such as oxygen therapy and fluid replacement to reduce dehydration. Experts emphasize the importance of protecting vulnerable groups and preserving NHS resources during peak RSV season
