Manchester has been ranked the best city in the UK to visit as part of a list of the world’s best places to travel to. Online travel guide Travel Lemming has released its Best Place to Travel in 2024 list, which recommends emerging destinations and hidden gems around the world to its more than 10 million travellers.
Yucatán in Mexico was named the top place to visit in the guide, followed by Gizo in the Solomon Islands and Stavanger in Norway. Manchester came in at 15th place, making it the highest placed UK city on the list and ranking ahead of Ko Yao Noi in Thailand and Taipei in Taiwan. The article invites travellers to “experience the UK culture without the stress and expense of London in the down-to-earth and effortlessly cool city of Manchester.” The guide also describes Manchester as a “northern powerhouse” with “some of the best pubs and bars in the entire UK.” The Northern Quarter, Castlefield, the Medieval Quarter, the National Football Museum, Chinatown, and Manchester Art Gallery are all identified in the guide as highlights in the city. Alex Brotherton, Travel Lemming writer and Manchester local, commented: “We do things differently in Manchester. Nowhere else in the world — never mind in the UK — can match my hometown’s concoction of fascinating history, music scene, food and drink options, cultural attractions, and entertainment.” Elsewhere on the list, Wales - in its entirety - makes it to 19th place for its "spectacular coastal scenery and breathtaking mountain views", with highlights including Cardiff and Snowdonia. The only other UK representation on the list comes in 40th place with Inverness in Scotland. Ranking higher than the likes of Steamboat Springs in Colorado, Bisbee in Arizona and Tennessee's Townsend, Travel Lemming said that visitors to Inverness would be “awe-struck by its cultural experiences and architecture, which includes a 19th-century castle”.
