Now that the days are longer and brighter it’s the perfect time to get outside and explore the beautiful landscapes we have right on our doorstep. We’re spoilt for choice in Greater Manchester with miles upon miles of gorgeous countryside to visit nearby.

The rambling countryside of Lancashire is full of beauty spots and walking trails, many of which are within easy reach of Manchester. It’s a landscape of rugged moorland, magical woodlands and rolling green hills. Lancashire is also home to several waterfalls, which make for the perfect focal point for a springtime walk. One of them is Hatch Brook Waterfall, hidden among the trees of the Wheeldon Plantation, located north of Rivington and east of Chorley. The waterfall is particularly impressive after rainy spells, when Hatch Brook tumbles over the moss-covered rocks. It can dry up so it’s best to visit after recent rainfall to avoid disappointment. It can be reached following The Goit walking trail, which passes alongside the plantation between the hamlet of White Coppice and the village of Brinscall. The waterfall isn’t the only feature hidden among the trees of the Wheelton Plantation; it’s also a place with intriguing industrial ruins which hint at the area’s mining past. You can start the walk to Hatch Brook Waterfall from White Coppice, where there is a small car park . At the hamlet’s picturesque cricket club is a tiny café, open at weekends from 9am to 4pm. It sells freshly baked cakes, refreshments and a legendary breakfast barm - perfect for fuelling up for your walk. From here follow the footpath alongside the Goit which will take you to the Wheeldon Plantation. Follow the river as it bears east, leading you to the waterfall. Be aware that the ground can be slippery and muddy nearby so take care and make sure you’re wearing suitable footwear. After checking out the waterfall you can extend your walk by stopping by the village of Brinscall where you can visit the Cottage Tea Room for a light bite, or the Cricketers Arms for a refreshing pint. Then you can head back to White Coppice via the woodland paths, or alongside the river once more. The circular walk is around three miles in length. Alternatively you can start it at Brinscall - where there is limited on street parking - and loop down to White Coppice instead.
