Tempest Jets: UK's Next-Gen Fighter Aircraft Seen For First Time
TEMPESTUKRAF

The UK Ministry of Defence has unveiled the first glimpse of the Tempest, a cutting-edge fighter jet set to replace the RAF's ageing Typhoon fleet by 2035. This new programme, developed under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), involves collaboration with Italy and Japan. While the progress is encouraging, concerns have been raised about potential cost overruns.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is collaborating with Italy and Japan on the Tempest jet fighter programme, a new generation of military aircraft set to replace the Royal Air Force's (RAF) aging Typhoon fleet by 2035. Work on the Tempest , developed under the global combat air programme ( GCAP ), is progressing well, according to MPs. However, concerns have been raised about potential cost overruns on the £12 billion budget.

Tan Dhesi, chairman of the Commons Defence Committee, stressed the need for the MoD to maintain strict control over the programme, warning against the common pitfalls of multilateral defence projects marred by escalating costs and delays. The Typhoon, a Eurofighter co-developed with Italy, Germany, and Spain, faced its share of challenges, including 'structural failings' and 'unnecessary delays and cost.' MPs emphasized the urgency to avoid repeating these issues with the Tempest. They expressed optimism that both the MoD and industry have recognized this critical need, citing Italy's experience with Typhoon delays as a valuable lesson. With the defence budget under increasing pressure, MPs urged both government and industry to prioritize cost control throughout the GCAP's development. Several prominent companies, including BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, Leonardo, and MBDA, have joined forces with the MoD to bring the Tempest to life. A MoD spokesperson affirmed the report's recognition of GCAP's importance for the UK's military capabilities, economic growth, and international partnerships. They underscored the substantial progress being made and reiterated the commitment of all GCAP partners to the 2035 target date for delivering a world-leading combat aircraft, ensuring the UK's continued edge against emerging threats for decades
