Alphonsine Djiako Leuga, 47, and her daughter Loraine Choulla, 18, were discovered by police officers on May 21, 2023. The cause of death for Choulla remains unascertained, while Alphonsine's provisional cause of death is pneumonia of uncertain origin. Notts Police have stated the deaths are not suspicious. However, their bodies had lain undiscovered for some time. A review is underway to examine the involvement of all local agencies with the family and the circumstances leading to their deaths.

Two women whose bodies had been found inside their council house in Nottingham , have been named as a fresh investigation is launched into their deaths. Alphonsine Djiako Leuga, 47, and Loraine Choulla, 18, were discovered by police officers inside their Nottingham City Council house on Hartley Road, Radford, on May 21 last year. Nottingham shire Police received a call regarding the two women's welfare at 11.

04am on May 21, with one neighbour saying the windows of the house had been open since February. Alphonsine and Choulla were named by coroner Rebecca Covington on Friday, January 24, at Nottingham Coroner's Court during the opening of an inquest into their deaths. The short hearing has revealed post-mortem examinations have been carried out on both women's bodies. Born on April 19, 2006, Choulla was identified through DNA comparison but her cause of death is still unascertained. Alphonsine, born on July 11, 1976, was identified using tissue samples for DNA comparison and a provisional cause of death has been established as pneumonia of uncertain cause. Coroner Covington recorded the death date for both women as May 21 - the day the bodies were discovered. She adjourned both hearings and said they will resume on a date yet to be fixed. Coroner Covington added: 'I wish to extend my condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Choulla and Alphonsine. I am very sorry for your loss.' In May, Nottinghamshire Police said the tragic deaths were not being treated as suspicious but added that the two bodies had lain undiscovered for some time. Nottingham City Council confirmed that a review was going to be conducted into the involvement of 'all agencies' regarding the circumstances that led up to the deaths. The period for which the two women had been dead before their bodies were discovered was also going to be investigated as part of the review. A Nottingham City Council spokesperson previously said: 'This is a tragic situation and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the mother and daughter who died. 'The full circumstances will be the subject of an inquest and a full review will be carried out to look at the involvement that all local agencies had with the family. Ahead of the inquest and review, we are unable to discuss the detail of this case, however we can confirm that the council had provided support to the family through its care and housing services.'
