Survival expert Bear Grylls explains why his Netflix show, Bear Hunt, starring Holly Willoughby, was not renewed despite its success. He cited the show's high production costs and changes in Netflix's leadership as key factors in the decision, while also looking forward to his new show Wild Reckoning.
Bear Grylls has shared insights into why his Netflix show, Bear Hunt , was not renewed. The show, which featured the survival expert, 51, and Holly Willoughby , 45, premiered last February and saw Grylls tracking down twelve celebrities. Despite achieving impressive ratings and featuring a star-studded cast including Mel B, Lottie Moss, and Boris Becker, the streaming giant opted not to commission a second season. Speaking to The Sun, Grylls explained the situation.
He highlighted the show's success, noting that it became the number one show on Netflix in the UK and maintained that position for two weeks. He emphasized that Netflix was pleased with the performance. However, Grylls pointed out that the show was expensive to produce. He cited internal changes within Netflix's leadership as a contributing factor, suggesting a preference for new projects. He described the decision as a close call, with a vote potentially leaning slightly against renewal. Grylls expressed his disappointment at the cancellation, while also praising the experience of working with Willoughby. He noted the positive dynamic they shared during the making of the series. He conveyed his belief that they will work together on a future television project. He further mentioned his upcoming BBC One show, Wild Reckoning, where he helps families, siblings and couples repair deep personal rifts through a series of physical and psychological challenges. The cancellation of Bear Hunt, despite its success, is a reminder of the complexities of the entertainment industry. The decision reflects the dynamic nature of streaming platforms and their constant pursuit of fresh content. Grylls also referenced other shows in his career, stating that the expensive ones are often the ones that do not succeed, like the World's Toughest Race, and Running Wild which is in its tenth season. Celebrity Bear Hunt had an impressive line up of celebrities which included Danny Cipriani, Big Zuu, Joe Thomas, Kola Bokinni and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Leomie Anderson, Shirley Ballas, Steph McGovern and Una Healy. The show featured twelve celebrities who were sent to a jungle in Costa Rica. They were forced to avoid being hunted down by Bear. Along the way, the celebrities faced various challenges and solve puzzles. Holly, 45, signed for the show after her terrifying kidnap torment at the hands of former security guard Gavin Plumb who was last summer found guilty of a plot to kidnap, rape and murder her. When Grylls called her, she revealed she immediately she said yes - a decision which was aided by her three children Harry, Belle and Chester
