Residents near an illegal dump partly owned by King Charles in Bickershaw, Wigan, are pleading for his intervention to clean up the site. The toxic waste has halved property values, caused health problems, and created a living hell for those living nearby.
Residents living near a massive illegal waste dump in Bickershaw , Wigan , are imploring King Charles to intervene and facilitate the cleanup of the toxic site. The situation has severely impacted the quality of life and property value s in the area, with homeowners reporting a halving of their house prices due to the noxious smell and vermin infestation emanating from the two-acre site.
The illegal dump, containing over 25,000 tonnes of household waste, dangerous chemicals, and plastics, is causing significant distress to the local community.\The residents' appeal comes as the Duchy of Lancaster, the King's portfolio of land and buildings, owns a portion of the contaminated site. The Duchy, however, claims exemption from cleanup responsibilities due to an ancient feudal legal framework. Despite this, the residents are urging King Charles to take action, asserting that the monarch should take responsibility regardless of the legal technicalities. The presence of the dump has rendered homes practically uninhabitable for some, with the stench making it impossible for children, particularly those with sensory sensitivities, to spend time at home. The residents' health and well-being have been significantly compromised by the ongoing issues. Locals report that the dump has been operating at its current capacity since early 2025. Adding to the locals' distress, the authorities are criticized for delays in taking action.\Adding to the frustration, the residents claim the council and Environment Agency's inaction during the initial stages of the illegal dumping has exacerbated the problem. Complaints began in October 2024, with up to 30 lorries a day transporting waste to the site. The residents are now demanding accountability and prosecutions, blaming the authorities for the current deplorable conditions. The Environment Agency has launched a criminal investigation following a fire that broke out at the dump, and Wigan Council has secured closure orders. The council has also stated that they believe that the landowners should be responsible for the cleanup, or the individuals who dumped the waste. Wigan Council has also appealed to the government for funding to resolve the matter
