Why Won't Men Believe Women About Powerful Abusers?
Sexual AbusePower DynamicsGender Inequality

The author recounts their experiences with male colleagues who dismiss allegations of abuse against powerful men, highlighting the systemic issue of disbelief towards women's accounts.

I've been arguing with men who just won't see how hard it is for women and girls to report the abuse of powerful men, and until we believe them, it will continueuntil we start believing and supporting women, beasts like Fayed will continue to hide in plain sight Twice this week, I’ve had genuinely tense conversations with male colleagues at work.

These otherwise “woke”, liberal teachers simply cannot understand whyWorse, as a devoted fan of Fulham, the football club that Fayed bought in 1997 and took to the Premier League,They are all men, and each is adamant that if these allegations were true, the women should have reported it – ignoring the fact they have now received 150 new claims from women since a BBC documentary carrying the allegations airedwhen he tried to expose Fayed back in the mid-1990s, he endured a lengthy legal battle with the billionaire’s lawyers amid fears that former police working as Fayed “heavies” would put pressure on sources. That the police could be complicit in the cover-up sparked a row in my staff room.in 2006, I met him, hoping to secure lucrative Harrods advertising. Ushered into his lush inner sanctum by serried security and glamorous assistants, I explained our difficulties with Kensington and Chelsea Council about distribution. He then suggested that we find the “prettiest girls in the store” to hand papers out, grinning: “You and me will choose them together.” I couldn’t leave fast enough. A colleague to whom I related the story was an ex-Harrods employee. She said she escaped because she was a “Jewish brunette”. Imagine being in your first job as a teenager, being made all sorts of promises that might improve your life, and then being placed in impossibly compromising and frightening situations; terrifying in the moment and subsequently traumatising. Do we really expect survivors to blithely report this to a police force that might leak the story or squash evidence, as Henry Porter has alleged? Several who did were visited by former cops, suggesting they should keepWhat if they didn’t? Sexual assault and rape cases often boil down to “her word against his”. Who would believe a naïve young girl against a powerful, rich, influential man with friends in the highest places? His lawyers would then try to undermine her, dredging up innocent previous sexual encounters to paint her in an unflattering light. She would then have to relive the whole horror again under aggressive legal cross examination. Heaven forfend you might misremember a date or location. Why can’t men see this? Why can’t they put their worldview aside to see this situation from those young, petrified women’s perspectives?
