A Nottinghamshire dad who dressed as Deadpool to combat speeding drivers has achieved success after new 30mph signs were installed on his street. Mark Spaven, 59, took action after his cat was tragically killed by a speeding vehicle. Spaven's unconventional campaigning, including standing in the street in his Deadpool costume, forced drivers to slow down and prompted the council to take action. He is now hailed as a local celebrity with his efforts leading to reduced speeding and a commitment from the council to review the speed limit on his street.
A Nottinghamshire dad who donned the costume of comic book character Deadpool to combat speeding drivers on his street has hailed victory after new 30mph signs were installed. Cavendish Drive in Carlton had become a hotspot for speeding motorists before Mark Spaven, a 59-year-old Marvel enthusiast, took action.
Inspired by the tragic death of his cat, Groot (named after a Marvel comic character), which was struck by a speeding vehicle last October, Spaven decided to take matters into his own hands. He donned the tight spandex suit and stood in the middle of the 30mph street, holding up a 'slow down please' sign. Spaven's unconventional approach garnered attention, forcing drivers to slow down and even sparking a conversation with the local council about adding more speed signs. 'I got a lot of horn papping and people would put their thumbs up,' Spaven said. 'People are slowing down even when they see me on the street without the costume. They're taking notice.' Spaven's efforts transformed him into a local celebrity, with residents recognizing him as 'Deadpool' and even requesting selfies. 'I'd get kids who want a photo, people would say 'do you mind doing a photo for my lad?' he shared.Sadly, health issues led Spaven to retire his Deadpool suit. But he's proud of his work, believing it has cut speeding traffic in half. 'It did the job. If people have got a problem they've got to get noticed, that's why I used it. You've got to do something to catch the eye. 'You never know I might've started a trend.' This week, five '30mph for a reason' signs were placed on Cavendish Drive by Nottinghamshire County Council. Spaven considers this a 'start', acknowledging the council's swift response to his campaigning. 'It's something and all things considering it's been fast for highways to latch on to. I wasn't expecting any signs at all,' he said. Nottinghamshire County Council has also pledged to review the speed limit on Cavendish Drive, potentially introducing a 20mph zone in the future. Councillor Neil Clarke, cabinet member for transport and environment, stated that 'any actions we ultimately take must be appropriate for roads across the county, including Cavendish Drive.' Michael Payne, the Labour MP for Gedling, who has been supporting Spaven's campaign, expressed his approval of the council's efforts: 'I am very supportive of the residents of Cavendish Drive in their endeavours to reduce speeding in their community. 'The latest response from Nottinghamshire County Council... is very welcome.'
