Temperatures are set to tumble - and then rise again rapidly - in a rather topsy-turvy week of weather ahead
Temperatures are set to plummet below freezing over the coming days, with a light dusting of snow forecast for higher ground this weekend.
The temperature drop is largely due to an icy northerly wind that will bring colder air down from the Arctic. However, forecasters say a new Jetstream arriving later next week will abruptly end the cold snap.By Thursday , temperatures could reach as high as 20C in Norfolk while in Lancashire it will reach 18C. Sunday's chill will bring light flurries of snow across the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, and the Outer Hebrides.
As the day progresses, it will warm up slightly - to around 9C in Lancashire and 10C in the capital. Rain is expected to sweep in from the west, making landfall across Northern Ireland by around 4pm.
