A tragic incident in Leeds saw a teenage girl thrown from her horse after it was spooked by an off-lead dog, leading to the horse bolting onto a busy road and being hit by a car. The horse, named Loki, sustained fatal injuries and had to be euthanized at the scene. Police are investigating the incident and appealing for information about the dog walker involved.
A teenage girl riding her horse was thrown from its back after it was startled by a dog off its lead. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 25, on Lingwell Nook Lane in Lofthouse, Leeds . The girl and her cousin were riding their horse, Loki, along a pit stack when a man in his 50s or 60s approached. According to a Facebook post by South and West Horse Watch Loose Horses, the man was bald, wore glasses, a raincoat, and black jogging trousers.
He was walking a chocolate-colored spaniel dog off the lead, described as being 'out of control'. The girls asked the man to put the dog on a lead as they passed, but he responded with a vulgarity, stating that it was public land. As the dog ran around the horses, Loki became spooked, bucking, rearing, and kicking. The girl was thrown from Loki's back, and the horse bolted to escape the agitated dog. Loki ran out onto Leeds Road and was tragically hit by a car, sustaining severe injuries to his legs. All four legs were shattered, and despite his valiant efforts to get up and off the road, he was unable to. The heartbroken owners, after witnessing the extent of Loki's injuries, made the difficult decision to euthanize him at the roadside. The driver of the car involved is also reportedly devastated, with his vehicle being totaled in the collision. West Yorkshire Police are currently investigating the incident. They were called to the scene at 4:31 pm on Saturday and confirmed the collision between the horse and car. The female rider was assessed by paramedics and did not require hospital treatment. The police statement highlights the seriousness of the horse's injuries, stating that it was euthanized at the roadside to prevent further suffering. The attending vet arranged for the horse's collection. The Horse Watch Facebook post calls for anyone with information about the dog walker's identity to come forward. It emphasizes the potentially disastrous consequences of having dogs off leads around horses and urges the public to prioritize safety. The post concludes with a heartfelt tribute to Loki, describing him as a 'beautiful soul' who will be deeply missed by his family. They offer their full support to Loki's family during this incredibly difficult time
