'Council-owned pools and gyms offer cheaper memberships'

Protesters wanting to keep existing swimming pools open in Skelmersdale and Ormskirk until new replacements are built lobbied West Lancashire Council last night. It came as councillors narrowly voted to start a public consultation about the future of two existing pools and look at other design options for potential future facilities.

Another woman said: "I'm a pensioner. Council-owned pools and gyms offer cheaper memberships than commercial leisure centres. The cost of living has risen so much. Affordable leisure centres are really important." Last night, borough councillors debated different options, arguments, budget deadines and financial details linked to pools and council leisure services. The ruling Labour administration said West Lancashire Council must take financial action to avoid the risk of being, in effect, declared 'bankrupt' next year and being put into special measures by the government, as has happened elsewhere such as Birmingham.
