Age UK Lancashire's Day Clubs provide a vital service for over-50s, combating loneliness by offering social interaction, engaging activities, and friendship opportunities. The article highlights the impact of the Walton Lane Day Club in Nelson, showcasing how it fosters connections and improves the well-being of its members.

One in 14 people over the age of 65 in the UK are lonely. Around 270,000 go at least a week without speaking to a friend or family member and nine in 10 lonely people are unhappy or depressed.

Not only that, but real friendships have been formed as a result of the Day Clubs. Becky added: "We have two ladies who come here and they've formed a really nice friendship. They always talk on the phone together." "It's all about the company, we like company. We all just get on, even if we haven't known someone for a long time. We can all talk to each other and if somebody needs something, they only have to ask."

Becky has even arranged a sports day for the members before, with service users partaking in classic races such as the egg and spoon and balancing a bean bag - something that was described by everyone as a "really fun day".The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the issue of loneliness within society and the dangers it can present.

Diane added: "We get good feedback from the service users, they seem to really enjoy it. Their family members get respite too.
