A British expat says his wife died after she was administered a prescription drug, as Spain launches an investigation into the medication

, Costa de Sol, almost two decades after his wife Mary was placed into intensive care following the administering of the painkiller.between one of the country’s most popular brand medications and dozens of fatalities – many reported among British and Irish expats.

Mary Ward died aged 59 in March 2006 after suffering agranulocytosis – the loss of white blood cells that severely increases the risk of infection – when she was given the drug following an operation. “I didn’t know he was not an oncologist,” he said of the doctor. “He knew very little about cancer. He was basically a cosmetic surgeon.

After returning home, Mr Ward realised that she was very ill and took her to the main hospital in Marbella. Doctors discovered that she was rapidly losing white blood cells, he said.“She gradually came round, but for a year after that, she couldn’t speak and was still in fairly serious care,” he said.

Mr Ward has been campaigning to stop Nolotil, also known as metamizole, from being prescribed since his wife’s death, and welcomes the High Court’s decision to investigate the drug amid continued reports of complications allegedly linked to the painkiller. Ms Garcia del Campo said she observed that several of her clients had similar infections, examined their medical reports and realised “they all have this in common: They had all taken Nolotil.”
