Functional assessments are set for an overhaul under the Health Transformation Programme.

The Department for Work and Pensions has shared new plans to improve disability health assessments for people with fluctuating conditions. The Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, Tom Pursglove MP, told the House of Commons on Monday that through the ‘Health and Disability White Paper’, “we have advocated for a number of tests and trials, including one that focuses specifically on better capturing fluctuating conditions”.

The DWP Minister explained how “assessments play an important part in ensuring people get the right entitlement”. He continued: “It is the claimant’s chance to give all the information needed to help make the right decision. The assessment, which measures the impact of a health condition on a person’s ability to live independently, is kept under review.”

It will also offer a choice of how to apply, for example, online or by post.

The Health Assessment Service will provide clear, simple information, instructions and decisions, so people know what to expect and feel involved and informed. It will also enable people to monitor and track their application and decisions.
