.A pilot to stop cars blocking streets for bin lorries is not going to plan

Police have been criticised at Belfast Council for not helping to clear streets for bin lorries in a pilot designed to help those areas which suffer inconsistent waste disposal due to car parking issues.

The small streets pilot was set up by the council in collaboration with the PSNI and the Stormont Department for Infrastructure, and began in May, with plans to end in October. The phased areas in play include Stranmillis, the Village Area, Loopland, Springfield Road, Lower Ormeau Road and Iveagh. “Officers have started looking at the data from these areas, both before and after each cycle, and hope to bring in more detailed analysis and results to the September 2024 Committee meeting.

Sinn Féin Councillor Claire Canavan said at the meeting: “It is disappointing to hear about the police not being able to put resources into the pilot. It is a worry, because they were the ones supposed to be leafleting the cars. I take it that is what DfI are doing now. The council have not officially announced the routes, but New Barnsley Drive, New Barnsley Crescent, and New Barnsley Gardens in West Belfast have been named by Sinn Féin Councillor Micheal Donnelly as being part of the small vehicle service from this week, for black bins only.
