Nutritional scientist has spoken out after health fears were raised over the humble tomato
A top scientist has stepped in to reassure worried Brits that tomatoes are safe to eat, after online speculation about certain chemicals in the fruit sparked health fears. Professor Tim Spector, a leading expert in nutrition and founder of the Zoe health app, urged people to continue enjoying tomatoes as part of a balanced diet, citing the numerous health benefits of a plant-rich diet.
"While it can be tempting to look at individual chemicals in plants and draw conclusions, we need to remember that each of these foods contain thousands of different chemicals. The diverse and complex interactions of these chemicals mean that the health effects of a whole food, or combination of foods in a meal, will likely be significantly different than that of isolated compound."
Tim's followers expressed relief and shared their previous confusion, with one admitting: "Thank you Tim. So much confusing information out there in the nutriglobe!" Another chimed in with relief: "Hurray! ! As if we should be frightened of tomatoes - how crazy." A third weighed in saying: "As you say Tim ... common sense... keep on eating plants."
