A Wigan man lost his entire collection of rare fish, worth over £60,000, when floodwaters inundated his home on New Year's Day.
Thousands of rare fish perished in the devastating floods that swept through Wigan on New Year's Day. Craig Anderson, a 26-year-old fish enthusiast, lost his prized collection of over 2,500 aquatic creatures, valued at more than £60,000, when floodwaters inundated his home. The ground floor of Anderson's residence, located around Templeton Road and Walthew Lane in Platt Bridge, was submerged, destroying the tanks where he housed his unique collection.
Anderson, who holds a dangerous animals license and is known for rescuing 'monster' fish across the north-west of England, had warned firefighters about the dangers of the floodwater. Some of his fish, including stingrays, catfish, and West African lungfish, had escaped and posed a potential threat. Heartbroken by the immense loss, Anderson described the situation as devastating, stating, 'I'm still dealing with lots of dead fish which are in the fish room at the back of the house and the tanks which are mostly wrecked.' He emphasized the emotional connection he had with his fish, stating, 'These fish are greatly loved and I believe my rescue provided great support for the fish-keeping community.' Prior to becoming a full-time fish caretaker, Anderson worked as a lorry driver. He dedicated his time to rescuing and caring for fish that had outgrown their original habitats. Anderson's home was one of several properties in the area severely impacted by the New Year's Day floods. Only five fish survived the ordeal, leaving Anderson with a profound sense of grief and loss
