Labour decides compensation not a ‘fair and proportionate’ use of taxpayers’ money
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall announced on Tuesday that her department did not accept the need for compensation, arguing it would not be a “fair and proportionate use of taxpayers’ money”.
Ms Kendall said the DWP did accept that there had been maladministration – but rejected the need to provide any money to Waspi women. The Work and Pensions Secretary apologised for her department’s delays in the delays getting letters out to 1950s born women, and said the DWP would “learn all the lessons to ensure this type of maladministration never happens again”.
Many claim they were not properly informed of the major change, and made life-altering decisions because they believed they would get their pension at 60. Waspi campaign chair Angela Madden previously said the group was “not scared of taking legal action” if ministers reject a compensation scheme.
