We made a Lancashire Hotpot with the cheapest Aldi ingredients we could find and it cost less than £7 to feed six

Lancashire Hotpot has been a staple for the county since the 19th century. The dish is thought to have originated during the peak of the cotton industry, and the simple meal that would have been left to cook slowly all day, ready for the hungry cotton workers at the end of their shift.

Modern variants of the traditional dish may now use beef for bacon, or be topped with a pastry crust. In the name of Lancashire Day we took on the challenge of cooking this traditionally cheap dish with the cheapest ingredients we could find.In the spirit of the dish, I used the cheapest meat I could find in Aldi, which was a pack of diced beef, coming in at around £4.29 for 700g. I'd never made a hotpot before, so this was a whole new process for me.
