The Foreign Office has issued a travel advisory warning UK tourists about the strict regulations regarding satellite phones and GPS devices in India.
The Foreign Office has urgently cautioned UK tourists about two specific electrical items that are strictly prohibited in India . British holidaymakers planning trips beyond the European Union, particularly to Asia, have been alerted by the Foreign Office to review the most recent travel advisories for their destination countries. The Foreign Office emphasizes the importance of understanding a country's laws before visiting to steer clear of any legal issues.
In its advisory, the FCDO stated: 'It is illegal to possess and operate satellite phones and GPS devices in India without a licence, even if you are only transiting through India. This may also cover other satellite-enabled devices, including handheld or cycling GPSs.' They added, 'You can be fined or arrested for possession of these devices without permission and the item can be confiscated.' Furthermore, the Foreign Office highlighted that several Britons have faced arrest or detention for carrying satellite phones and other satellite-based navigational gadgets into India without the necessary authorisation. It's crucial to note that disregarding advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) could lead to your travel insurance being voided, reports Birmingham Live. The FCDO advises against all travel within 10km of the India-Pakistan border, with the exception of Wagah, where crossing the border is permitted.
